Tutorial: DIY Wedding Event Makeup

Congratulations! You’re engaged!!! And now... you’re quickly realizing how many events you’ll be attending leading up to the big day! While hiring a makeup artist to do your makeup is always a great idea, I completely understand that it’s not always an option for every wedding event. Don’t worry! I got you! In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to achieve a natural-glam makeup look perfect for any event (bachelorette party, bridal shower, engagement party, engagement photos, or even your own elopement!) all on your own!

By using what you learn in this tutorial, and adding your own flare, you’re bound to achieve gorgeous, camera ready event makeup looks every time… without a heavy face of makeup!

Prep

Before even going into the “event style” makeup, it’s a great idea to start with your normal foundation & eyebrow application. Don’t overthink this, just do it as you normally would to give your makeup a great base to work off of.

Note: Make sure you are using the right color foundation. Depending on the seasons, the foundation you use will likely change, to just ensure that your foundation matches your skin tone for a more flawless look.

If you need some extra guidance on how to properly do your face makeup for your event, check out these two tutorials:

Eye Shadow

Eye shadow is where all the fun begins! This is where you can begin taking your look from normal, everyday makeup, to the glam event makeup you’re wanting! I recommend using three neutral colors that compliment your skin tone. In this video, I used: MAC “Kid” eyeshadow, MAC “Cork” eyeshadow and MAC “Brule” eyeshadow. I then topped it with Stila “Kitten” eyeshadow in the middle of my lid & the corners to give that shimmery glow.

Note: Neutral colors are always a great option because they’re basically foolproof! Because they all blend so well together, it’s ok if you make mistakes, they can all easily be fixed. WHEN IN DOUBT, GO NEUTRAL.

Eye Liner

Eye liner is so important, especially for photos when you are wanting that more defined eye! Here, I started with NARS “Last Frontier“ High-Pigment Longer Eyeliner (which is a brown shade) and did a basic top liner line, making it just a smidge thicker towards the end. After that, I recommend going in with Morphe Felt-Tip liquid liner (in black) on top of the brown liner to really define the eye liner. Doing it in those two steps, with the black on top, allows for the brown to act as a guide to follow. It’s a fun trick I learned along the way, and a great way to perfect your eyeliner.

Note: Your eye liner preference & placement may be totally different than mine, so make sure you experiment with what you like best. Brown? Black? Pencil? Liquid? Shadow? They all create a different look, so don’t be afraid to practice with all of them.

Mascara

Mascara really allows you to define your eyes and give them that dramatic, glamorous feel! For event makeup, especially if it’s anything wedding related, I recommend using a waterproof mascara & the Milk Kush Mascara is one of the best! Take the time to curl your lashes before applying, it will make a difference. When you apply, make sure you do several coats and focus on applying to the ends of your lashes.

Bronzer

Bronzer is the next step and allows you to really contour and shape your face. I highly recommend MAC “Matte Bronze” Bronzer because it’s a great matte bronzer without shimmer. That allows you to apply it anywhere you’d like without a random shimmery look that isn’t always wanted. Start applying bronzer on your cheek bones, starting at the ear and pulling it down. You can also add some to the hairline and nose, if you prefer!

Note: If you want to define your nose contour more, use a skinny brush.

Blush

Blush is a step that shouldn’t be skipped! In my opinion, it gives such a young, sweet and romantic feel to your overall makeup look. I strongly recommend having a great blush like Kylie Cosmetics “Baddie on the Block” blush on hand. Add it to the apple of your cheeks, pull it towards the bronzer & feel free to blend with your foundation blush if need be.

Lips

It’s important, even if you’re not big on wearing anything on your lips, to wear something!! If you don’t wear anything at all, it’s going to look like you don’t have any lips in pictures, and trust me… you don’t want that!

A current favorite by many of my brides is the NYX Slim Lip Pencil “Mauve” topped with MAC “Angel” lipstick for a super natural, but beautiful lip color.

Highlighter

When adding highlighter to your makeup look, make sure you’re applying it to the high planes of your face like on top of the cheek bone and/or a little down your nose. A little bit goes a long way and will look beautiful when the sun or light hits it.

My biggest piece of advice when it comes to doing your own makeup for any event is to practice beforehand! The absolute worst feeling is when you sit down at your event, after doing your own makeup, and you don’t feel confident and comfortable in it. So take the time to practice and experiment with different products and techniques beforehand to ensure you’ll feel 100% confident in the look you create. Good luck!
