Natural vs. Neutral MakeUp: What’s the Difference?

Is there really a difference between natural and neutral makeup? The short answer is YES! Oftentimes it’s also very much a personal belief in what is “natural” or “a lot.” In this blog post, I’m breaking down some of the crucial differences between the two in order to help you decipher what’s right for you. And if you’re getting married soon or getting your makeup done for an event, this will help you know exactly how to communicate to your makeup artist what final look you’re envisioning. Let’s dive into the nitty gritty!

'

Natural Makeup

  • This can sometimes be described as “No-Makeup Makeup” or “Second Skin.” This look defines your features without major changes, sculpting, or colors.

  • Simply put… it’s minimal makeup! Think your everyday makeup routine... elevated!

  • Natural makeup is a look often seen in advertisements and has become popularized by high fashion models like Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner.

  • Let me bust a common thought here… less makeup does NOT mean less work for your artist. In fact, it often means more steps & patience to create that perfect balance of products to make it look completely effortless!

Neutral Makeup

  • This look is often referred to interchangeably as Natural Glam Makeup.

  • Neutral makeup gives you more of a flawless look using neutral tones!

  • A neutral look often features fuller foundation coverage, sculpting and neutral colors with more definition in all areas.

  • Many times, to non-makeup wearers, this look feels like “a lot!”

  • If you’re looking for a modern day, well-known example of someone who rocks neutral makeup looks on the regular, look at the Kardashians. They are the queens of gorgeous, neutral makeup! (But don’t be fooled.. this is often many layers and hours of makeup application!)

Don’t worry if inspiration from both types of makeup looks are appealing to you! Instead just think a little deeper. Ask yourself.. What is it about the photo that you like? Is it the colors… the coverage? Maybe it’s something specific like the eye liner or the lip color. Make sure to communicate these things with your artist so they can help you achieve the perfect look!
