Makeup Brush Basics: Face Brushes

Hey guys! This week I’m back with another Brush Basics tutorial. You may have seen last week’s video on Eye brushes (if not, check it out my top four favorites here)- this is part two of the series! This quick video is going to offer you basic guidelines for the best face brushes. It’s also great if you’re looking to switch up your regime.

By using these four face brush types, you’ll save time and get a better overall application and look. First on the list is the Foundation Brush!

Foundation Brush: Stippling Duo Fibre Brush

I always recommend starting with your eye makeup application, before you get started on your foundation. But once you’re ready to begin applying your base, the Duo Fibre brush is my favorite! You may have also heard the dual fiber brush referred to as a Skunk Brush.

Once you’ve done a quick clean-up around your eyes (something really gentle like a wet wipe or baby wipe is perfect for removing the excess shadow), select your liquid, powder or cream foundation. I like to mix different colors, so I add to my hand first.

Using a big brush makes for quick application and blends really nicely. Although you certainly can apply with your fingers, I find that oil can be on fingers, which can lead to streaks. A Beauty Blender or sponge can also be fine for application, but I find that it’s best for full coverage.

The application with a brush is really unmatched and it’s way less work. It’s a great everyday brush.

Plus, it’s easy to wash (I recommend once every one to two weeks).

Concealer Brush/Fluffy Brush

Concealer is applied after the foundation. I love using a fluffy brush- the same one I mentioned in last week’s eye brush tutorial- because a fluffy brush buffs really nice. Although some people prefer the fuller coverage you’re able to achieve with your finger, I love the natural blended look achieved with a brush.

Powder Brush

Once you have applied your concealer, you want to be sure to set. Setting powder is best applied to the t-zone and under eyes. This keeps things dewy by not shiny. If you’re super oily- you may need to use a fuller brush than what I recommend below.

Angled Brush for Bronzer/Contour

I love an angled brush! An angled brush is still fluffy, but it’s a touch stiffer than a face or blush brush, and the unique shape is ideal for concentrated coverage. The reason I recommend a contour brush is because it’s the ideal option for bronzer. You really need something different for contouring than a blush brush because otherwise, you're inadvertently mixing colors. This is not the area of your face that a color blend works- you’ll find the color muddles and things don’t look quite right. Keeping these two brushes varied ensures a better application.

Blush Brush

This one is pretty straight forward. Apply your pink or orange hued color with this fluffy favorite to get a soft glow on the apples of your cheeks! The key to blush is blending to keep it natural!
