How to Identify Your Skin Type
Here are the basics for identifying your basic skin types. I promise, this information will be super helpful to be aware of when you’re shopping for skincare or makeup products and so you don’t have to have that awkward conversation anymore!!
*Before we begin… this blog post does not include any skin related issues like acne, eczema, rosacea, etc… but those can certainly affect the texture & appearance of your skin. Medications, hormones, climate, diet, & other outside things may also play a role as well.
Let’s break this down into 4 different types that your skin likely falls into. Below each type will be bulleted points you can relate to your skin to see if you fall within that category.
Dry Skin:
Dryness can usually be felt upon touch. If you have dry skin, you’ll likely notice that you skin feels rough, textured or even sand-paper like.
You may feel tightness of the face without moisturizer or even itchiness.
In extreme cases, you may even have peeling or cracked areas of the skin (this is common around the nose or mouth).
Sometimes, if you have dry skin, you’ll notice that makeup might “catch.” Those areas that you see this happening are typically those more textured areas.
Oily Skin:
Oily skin typically appears as a shiny, sweaty-like look. This is usually more noticeable in the “T-zone” (but it’s not limited to that specific spot).
The “T-Zone” is the center of your face. Specifically, the middle of the forehead, down the nose to the chin and the sides of the nose moving towards the cheek.
Often times, makeup doesn’t “last” on oily skin.
*Important fact: Many people have oily-like skin due to lack of hydration on the skin. When your skin is dry & dehydrated, it begins producing oil to make up for the lack of hydration and giving you an overall oily appearance! Drink more water to see if it helps!
Combination Skin:
Did you just read both of the above sections and relate to both of them? That means that you may just have a combination of issues from both dry & oily skin types!
This is often the most difficult skin type to battle with & sometimes takes a little extra TLC with skincare and makeup products.
Normal Skin:
If none of these sound like your skin… you most likely have normal skin! Don’t worry if you have oily or dry days depending on hormones or the season, that’s completely normal! But overall, you have balanced skin!
Everybody’s skin is unique to them. Your skin might not fit perfectly into one category, or maybe it does! Taking care of your skin is so important, regardless of your skin type.
