Get Inspired with These Tips for Creatives

Hey fellow creatives! There is so much more to our business than just being creative. All of the behind the scenes tasks can add up and easily cause creative-burnout or creative-block! Whether you’re coming out of a period of creative-burnout or hitting a wall, it’s important to know how to overcome that and turn your “job” into a passion again! Here are some tips to help you break through that wall, get your imagination flowing again & channel your best ideas yet!

Tips for Creatives

Tip #1: Disconnect

Turn off the tv & power down your phone. Endless hours of scrolling leaves us consuming way more than we’re creating these days. It also leaves us with that nasty feeling that we’re not doing nearly as much as we should be as we get stuck in a rut comparing ourselves to others. So STOP… yes, right now… STOP. Put down your electronics, go for a walk, call a friend to meet for a chat, maybe try hot yoga. Anything that forces you to focus your energy on something other than a screen is a great way to disconnect from comparison and reconnect with your creativity.

Tip #2: Give Journaling a Try

Get your creative energy flowing with this easy daily task. I used to roll my eyes at the idea of journaling until one day I was desperate enough to try it. Some days it’s an incredible emotional release for me that allows me to leave my stress on paper and free up my headspace to be able to create. Other days it simply warms me up to think more clearly or work out a solution to a problem, whether business or personal. Not sure where to start? Easy prompts like “Today I’m thankful for…” are always great starters.

Tip #3: Visit Your Happy Place

I’m a huge fan of the beach. Something about the sounds & smells of the ocean bring me a sense of peace and make me feel like I am far away from the business of my world. Those moments of peace allow me to recharge my batteries enough to tackle the world at 100% again. Maybe your place is the woods, a snowy mountain top, your favorite coffee shop, or at home in your own bed. Wherever it is, allow yourself to go there and recharge your batteries. There is nothing wrong with taking a break in order to best serve your business AND your mental health!

Tip #4: Try Something New

With the world of social media, sometimes we can feel like we’re constantly under pressure to create new content. Looming deadlines or pressure to push out new ideas can take the fun out of the very thing you love... being creative! One of my favorite things to do is step away from my “job” and explore a new way of expressing myself. I like to switch up it by exploring different mediums & using different senses to do just that! It’s a great way to get your creative juices flowing!

Some examples are: Having a dance party or taking a Zumba class to get moving, buying a coloring book and a big box of colored pencils, making a vision board, singing karaoke! Sometimes all you need is a release in a new way you haven’t tried before!

Tip #5: Meditate

Sit in silence for a few moments? Clear my mind? “No way, no thanks, too busy…” was my mindset until I had a yoga teacher who brought a heavy meditation influence to her practice. With guidance, I was able to fully clear my mind & quiet the noise of my own spinning wheels. Every week, I would leave that class feeling rejuvenated, energized and like I could skip all the way home! This can be tough to achieve on your own but there are apps & even Youtube videos to get you started with a “guided meditation” until you are able to practice on your own.

Tip #6: Read

Reading is one of my favorite hobbies to either clear my mind or focus my mind, depending on the book. Choose an old favorite to bring back memories, a new story to get excited about, or a business book if you’re feeling lost in a certain area of your business. Make a little ritual out of it to honor some time for yourself. If you’re on the go a lot, I’ve found audiobooks to be great for lots of time spent in the car!
